Digital transformation case studies
Town of Oakville
The Town of Oakville engaged AECO Innovation Lab to help drive forward the use of technology for improving the property development review and approval process. AECO developed a number of projects for Oakville.
Municipal 2040 Vision video
This project highlights how recent and upcoming technology like BIM, GIS, Digital Twins, and Reality Capture can offer new perspectives and bring efficiencies to municipal plans review and inspection processes.
Municipal Digital Vision
A digital vision, plan, and roadmap for property development service over the next decade. This project outlines how municipalities can go from having simple digital submissions to unlocking their full digital potential throughout the property development process and use that information to enable new opportunities in city information modelling.
BIM Pilot for Municipalities
This project outlines how municipalities can use BIM to change their processes and encourage collaboration between plans examiners and applicants, streamline reviews, and enable automation to improve the review process.
CSA Group
The CSA group worked with AECO on a research project involving a team of experts put together by AECO in collaboration with ÉTS Montreal and the University of British Columbia to develop a roadmap for standards development and diffusion of BIM in Canada.
The team gathered and categorized approximately 500 documents to conduct a thorough literature review to understand the standards and documentation that have been implemented in international jurisdictions.
The team also developed an extensive survey, interview questions, and workshops to gauge industry’s opinions on the status of BIM in Canada and the need for standards. The results of both the literature review and industry engagement were summarized and a list of action items were developed to inform the next steps for BIM in Canada.
BuildingSmart Canada
BSC engaged AECO Innovation Lab as lead consultant on many projects. Through these, AECO developed frameworks and guidelines to drive BIM adoption, supporting streamlined digital processes for project and asset lifecycle management nationwide.
Industry Readiness
This report evaluates the industry readiness for BIM and ISO 19650 framework implementation in the context of the Government of Canada's (GC) transition towards digital strategies to manage their property assets.
Digital Delivery for Bridge Construction Projects
This project aims to assist Kingston in understanding the value that BIM and BIM Standards can bring to bridge and other infrastructure projects. This includes developing a framework for organizational and project-based goals for digital delivery, determining what information is needed to make decisions in the city, what City systems the models need to integrate with, and how the models will support City business and operations.
Towards a Digital Construction Platform at the National Research Council of Canada
This report outlines the proposed NRC Digital Construction Platform (DCP) and develops a research and development roadmap to deliver it. This initiative involves setting the foundation for improved data management systems, enhancing Building Information Modelling (BIM) compatibility, ensuring Common Data Environment (CDE) interoperability, and integrating API connections for seamless information exchanges among the different stakeholders within the Canadian built asset industry.
openBIM Implementations for a Canadian Roadmap
This comprehensive research project investigates the transformative journey of the Canadian architecture, engineering, construction, owner, operator, and municipality sectors as they adopt BIM and openBIM standards to digitalize the planning, design, construction, and management of built assets.
